Although the charming town of Sumter, in the middle of South Carolina, is slightly more than an hour’s drive from the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and wide sandy beaches, and a three-hour drive from the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, there’s plenty to keep visitors and residents occupied without leaving home.

Its size is just right. At 108,000 residents in the city and county, Sumter is large enough to offer all of the conveniences of a large city, with a small, hometown feel. The town is home to a number of national and international corporations, which chose this area for its wonderful four-season climate, skilled workforce and friendly, welcoming people.
The Sumter Opera House is in the middle of downtown Sumter. This historic building is a center for the performing arts, featuring world-class performances throughout the year in film, dance, theatre, concerts and more.
The world-famous Swan Lake Iris Gardens draws visitors from around the world. They visit to be enchanted by the beautiful flowers as well as magnificent swans, including the earliest inhabitants, the Australian Black Swans. Other swans include Royal White Mute Swans, Black-necked swans, Coscorobas, Whoopers, Trumpeters and more, gliding effortlessly along the black waters of Swan Lake.
The new Artists Colony of Sumter features unique paintings, art objects, and antiques, available for viewing and for purchase. It reveals the wealth of talent to be found in the area.

The Palmetto Tennis Center is an official Tennis Welcome Center, offering classes and tournaments, as well as more casual play.
The City of Sumter Aquatics Center is approved for competition swim meets, and offers swim lanes, a slide and a wading pool. Swim camps give youngsters summer fun as they learn a new skill for a healthy lifestyle.
Sumter is filled with history, and was named for General Thomas Sumter, a
hero of the American Revolution. Since 1941, it’s been home to Shaw Air Force
Base. A number of retired officers who once were stationed at Shaw have chosen
it as an ideal retirement location. Others don’t wait until retirement. They
know that Sumter is a perfect choice for living well, southern style.
