o much to do and enjoy in this, one of America’s favorite towns. Start with a hearty breakfast at the Early Girl Eatery. A friend recommends the Early Girl Benny -- Eggs Benedict made with grits cake, tomato gravy and avocado.

Well-fortified and energy-filled, it’s time to consider your day’s options for fun. Nature-ists may want to take a Crayola inspired drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway (in Autumn, of course). For more manicured flora, visit the Asheville Botanical Gardens, with its native species, or perhaps the North Carolina Arboretum, with its beautiful gardens and some of the most amazing bonsai trees you’ll ever have the pleasure of seeing.

Sooner or later, hunger will strike, and among many fine choices, we suggest the Apollo Flame Bistro. Food and prices are great and it’s been an award-winner for more than a decade. Their Big Fat Greek Platter will soothe your soul and make your tummy smile.

And then, it’s time to get your walking shoes primed for world-class shopping. The Grove Arcade comes to mind and never disappoints. Ditto on the Portico Market, Asheville’s only permanent outdoor market.

To check out some of the creative results of living amongst such mountain splendor, visit Woolworth Walk, with more than 150 exhibiting artists. Catch a glimpse of how the locals shop by touring the Western North Carolina Farmer’s Market. Fresh produce is available, but that’s just the beginning. Crafts, preserves, home-made bread and more – oh my!

Eventually, you’ll want to eat again and one excellent choice is Cucina 24. Consider the goat cheese panna cotta, with pistachio brittle, as well as the mountain trout with artichoke and preserved lemon risotto. Yum…

You could spend a happy week or two in Asheville, but at least plan to spend the night and if one night’s all you have, The Grove Park Inn exudes good times in fantastic surroundings. You’ll sleep soundly, knowing that you haven’t even visited Asheville’s most famous destination, Biltmore House and Gardens. Tomorrow, however, is another day.
