Connie and Donald Zich found their retirement home in the area around Mullins and Marion, S.C. almost by accident. “We didn’t even know there was a Marion County,” Mrs. Zich says. She and her husband were looking to retire away from Chester Virginia, near Richmond. They found the home and land they wanted in a real estate book, visited, made an offer, and now are busy unpacking and adjusting to a rural lifestyle.
“I grew up in more of a country setting, and this is wonderful for me, but maybe even better for my husband. He’s always been a city boy and now he enjoys more time spent outside.”
Their home sits on 8.5 acres, complete with pond and fountain. It includes an outdoor kitchen and Mr. Zich is enjoying grilling. Is a garden in their future? “Probably not,” Mrs. Zich explains. “With so many farmers around here, we can buy from them and support local businesses.”
With 7,000 residents in Marion and 5,500 in Mullins, Marion County has a definite small town atmosphere which suits the Zichs perfectly. Despite a beautiful historic district and comfortable shopping and dining, the feel is rural.
Marion County and the town of Marion were named for the Revolutionary War General Francis Marion. The area’s history extends back to Colonial times, with a sizable native American population before that. The three towns in Marion County – Marion, Mullins and tiny Nichols – were sleepy little farming hubs until tobacco was introduced in 1894. With a climate and soil perfect for that broad leaf plant, warehouses sprang up and Mullins became known as the “Tobacco Capital” of South Carolina.
Nearby Marion has an attractive historic district with lovely homes, some of which have been in one family for generations. One of them, The Grove, the Inn on Harlee, is owned by relative newcomers Denley and Ann Caughman and is one of the foremost examples of Eastlake Victorian architecture in the Eastern U.S. Rosewood Manor, Webster Manor and The Decantor Inn are also in the county.
An abundant workforce is among the factors that have attracted strong businesses to Marion, including Beneteau boat manufacturer, ArvinMeritor, a manufacturer of motor vehicle parts and accessories, Datwyler Rubber + Plastics, Inc., and Road Rescue, an ambulance manufacturer.
Strategically located, the north-south I-95 corridor is less than 15 miles away. International and commercial airports are less than an hour’s drive to either, and two deep-water ports are under two hours’ drive. As a result, Marion is the quintessential small southern town with big city connections close by.
Mr. and Mrs. Zich are amazed at the friendliness of the folks they’ve met. Ming, their Chow Chow, made the move with them and they are particularly pleased that they’ve found a wonderful groomer who breeds dogs and keeps Ming in top form. They enjoy riding motorcycles in the countryside around Marion, and intend to enjoy their retirement years discovering all about South Carolina small town living.
