Film treasures in an intimate, downtown theatre

Explore your options!

Since 1979, the Columbia Film Society has managed The Nickelodeon, a 77-seat store front theatre that features a wide variety of alternative films, media arts events and education programs.

“The Nick,” as it’s affectionately called, presents two film screenings every evening and matinees four days a week. It’s the only non-profit art house film theater in South Carolina and attracts about 25,000 film goers every year. Currently, the Nick is in the midst of a capital campaign to relocate to the former Fox/State Theatre at 1607 Main Street. The move will enable the Nick to grow in terms of size and programming.

 Special events include:

The Indie Grits Film Festival, five years old in 2011, is a film festival which seeks films from Southeast Filmakers that “embrace grittiness, transcend boundaries and defy categorization.”

Annual programs include film forums, the Columbia Jewish Film Festival, and special film series featuring some of the many special interests in the midlands area, including African American, Native American and GLBT communities.

Deb Yerkes has been a volunteer with The Nick for more than 20 years. “I’ve helped with the concessions and front of the house and really love seeing all these movies,” she says. “Going to The Nick has turned me into a cinemafile, a real movie fan. There are so many great films that have limited releases, including small, wonderful movies that talk about the human experience.”

Ms. Yerkes enjoys the foreign films as well. “When you watch foreign films, you learn about all of the cultures you’ve never personally experienced. I’ve seen movies about India, Spain, Scotland Iran, and many more.” Among her personal movie favorites are the recent Bob Dylan Biopic, “I’m not There,” and the animated French film, “The Triplets of Belleville.”

South Carolina’s only non-profit cinema offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a great film with a bottle of wine or beer, homemade brownies and cookies, and zero transfat popcorn.
