hiteville could easily be called the hub of Southeastern North Carolina, considering it’s about an hour’s drive from Wilmington, Fayetteville and the North Carolina beaches. Heading south, that same hour will reach the Grand Strand. At first glance, Whiteville is a typical small Southern town, but on closer inspection, it’s easy to find the amenities that keep locals from moving away and that regularly attract newcomers.

Agriculture has been the mainstay for the local economy over the years and the tradition continues as fertile fields yield themselves to crops of corn, strawberries, tobacco and yams. And in Whiteville, the delicious pecan has earned a high place of distinction. During the first weekend in November, the North Carolina Pecan Harvest festival brings crowds for everything from homemade butter pecan ice cream to an exploration of yet another unique exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Forestry.

Whiteville is a town of history, as well. In 2005, the renovation of the downtown depot, properly named Vineland Station for the town’s early association with five local vineyards, was completed. Four depots, including Vineland Station, have been renovated throughout Columbus County. The local drug store features homemade lemonade from an old fashioned soda fountain. The historic Columbus Courthouse, where court continues to be held weekly, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Daily walkers on Madison Street pass the time of day and enjoy a safe, scenic route filled with attractive, historic homes.

n describing Whiteville, visitors typically say the town feels much larger than its population. Perhaps this is because it is the county seat and draws shoppers for its retail stores and services, including Columbus Regional Healthcare System and what many call the “Crown of Columbus County,” Southeastern Community College. Students of all ages appreciate the broad spectrum of classes available at the college. It has built a reputation as one of the finest community colleges in North Carolina’s excellent system since it was founded in 1965.

Of course, another description of Whiteville citizens is “friendly.” Newcomers are quickly welcomed into the life of this active community. Whether one’s interest lies in the art, theatre, or musical genre, a Friday night football game at Whiteville High School, or a few golf lessons at the club, there’s plenty to keep busy. Or not.

Center for Carolina Living The warm afternoons and temperate climate make it a nature lover’s paradise. Just a few miles toward Wilmington, beautiful Lake Waccamaw’s year-round population is escalating, while those who have called it their summer home for generations yearn for the summers to never end. In addition to boating and fishing, the lake also boasts a host of ecosystems of major biological significance in North Carolina. It is recognized as the largest natural lake between Maine and Florida and proudly hosts Lake Waccamaw State Park.

The town of Lake Waccamaw has a major attraction for other sportsmen as well. The 5,000 square foot Exhibition Center of Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina regularly provides a variety of equine events, especially during the summer season. Columbus County is well suited for raising and riding horses.

Whether it’s looking up at the rich blue August sky or searching for the more elusive red-cockaded woodpecker, eastern diamondback rattlesnake, or the threatened American alligator in the 15,722 acre Green Swamp Preserve, nature provides select splendor in Columbus County.

Small town charm seems to run deeply in the quiet, little haven of Whiteville, centrally located in Columbus County and southeastern North Carolina. Yet, connections to the big cities spike in all directions making it easily accessible if, and when, desired.
