Center for Carolina Living In a former life, the lovely historic building which now serves as the Gaffney Visitors Center and Art Gallery was the town post office. Constructed in 1913, the city has restored many of the historic architectural attributes. It's one of the most beautiful buildings in Gaffney. Be sure to stop by for the latest in what's happening. Center for Carolina Living This replica of the Michael Gaffney Cabin was constructed after the city's Bicentennial in 2004 as a commemorative attraction. (A clever local citizen had saved 26 logs from the original log home and donated them to the project.) Today, Gaffney hosts several "Shindig at the Cabin" and "Pickin' on the Porch" concerts which are free for attendees. These parties are popular with locals and visitors. Center for Carolina Living

Military Memorabilia

The battle of Kings Mountain, fought October 7th, 1780, was an important American victory during the Revolutionary War. The battle was the first major patriot victory to occur after the British invasion of Charleston, SC, in May 1780. The National Military Park preserves the site of this important battle and is definitely worth a visit. All ages will be fascinated.

History enthusiasts will also want to explore Cowpens National Battlefield. The Battle of Cowpens took place on January 17, 1781 and became known as the turning point of the revolutionary War in the south. Visitors can enjoy touring the Visitor Center, with its Revolutionary War artifacts, a reproduction three-pounder cannon, interpretive exhibits and hands-on exhibits for children. There are also theme-related souvenirs available for purchase.

Outdoors, families can walk the Battlefield trail, and an inviting picnic area provides tables, grills and restrooms. From April 23-October 2, Battlefield Tours are offered.

Suggestion: Ask about the Battlefield Guide Service showcasing any of three nearby battlefields - Cowpens, Kings Mountain and Ramseur's Mill. Tours are done in your vehicle with a guide in the front passenger seat. Tours offered are 30, 60 and 90 minutes long. See more at www.thebattleofkingsmountain.com .

Be a Chowhound

When it’s time to eat, you have choices. Try Daddy Joe's Beach House, Bar-B-Que & Grill, on Floyd Baker Blvd.

Go traditional here, and try some version of their BBQ – slow-smoked all night and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. We are in the South, after all. The side items will not disappoint, but meat is the star.

Shop or Play

Your afternoon can be filled with more battlefield experiences, or you can opt for more gentle skirmishes – shopping at Gaffney Premium Outlets – known for 75 stores, including the likes of Polo, Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers and much more. Bargain hunters delight in this beautifully upscale group of stores. And plenty of refreshment centers keep energy levels high, and your sweet tooth satisfied.

Perhaps an afternoon of golf is more your style. Gaffney’s got that as well, at Gaffney Country Club and Cherokee National Golf Club. In fact, this might be the time to choose different directions to make everyone happy.

Arts & Education

Visitors will enjoy attending productions at Gaffney Little Theatre, and special events at Limestone College. As a college town, Gaffney benefits from Limestone’s talented students, faculty, and guest artists specializing in music, theatre and dance.

Limestone was founded about 1845 and features buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places. Before becoming a college the original building was a world-renowned hotel which welcomed guests from around the world. The old Limestone quarry there is represented in the Washington Monument.

Night-time Amusements

When evening falls, visitors may choose a fabulous dinner at the B&B, or perhaps some hearty American cuisine at Kelly’s Steakhouse and Bar, in nearby Blacksburg. One reviewer on Urbanspoon said, “Kelly's has great steaks and the best Prime Rib I have eaten this side of Texas.” Not a bad endorsement!

For those who enjoy the nightclub scene, Capri on Main is an old, single-screen movie theatre which has been converted into a club featuring live touring bands and comedy acts. A full-service bar provides your favorite libation.

Good Night

By now you and yours are undoubtedly exhausted from all the food, fun, history and music. Time for bed and a very restful sleep. Tomorrow, there’s more fun to be had.

Day Two

Up early, to enjoy a hidden gem in Gaffney. The Cherokee County History and Arts Museum is guaranteed to entertain all ages. It offers a rich resource for Cherokee County History & Culture. This museum educates as it entertains. Visitors will learn about weapons used by American Indians, as well as the rhythm of life for early European settlers. Limestone mining and peach farming are just two of the activities portrayed in the 5,000 sq. ft. museum. History lovers will enjoy the reproduction of a small-town doctor’s office, a tiny depression-era kitchen and a church sanctuary. The work of area artists and crafters is also highlighted.

The Cherokee County History and Arts Museum is part of the Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society (CHAPS) and is located near the Limestone College campus. Check the Website for admission information.

Lunchtime and Beyond

Bronco Mexican Restaurant is a favorite among locals. Its Mexican food is authentic and downright delicious. Make sure you save time to stroll before and after you dine. Finish touring the nearby battlegrounds, and spend some time wandering the back roads. There are heritage gardens, world-famous mansions, wine trails and more. No matter when you decide to visit, Gaffney will have dozens of ways to entertain you.
