his is the first town included in this series that is a suburb of a city –
Columbia, the capital of South Carolina.
It has enough unique character to be included and most folks from Lexington would take strong issue with calling it a suburb.
With a population of 10,000, Lexington offers a blend of modern municipal facilities, two fine county museums, and the popular Lake Murray, with its 500 plus miles of shoreline covering 78 square miles. Boating and fishing are both popular activities on the lake.

exington is considered one of the fastest growing areas in South Carolina, with one of the best school districts in the state.
The Lexington County Museum complex encompasses seven acres of property and features over 30 historic structures. Some date back to 1770.
The Saluda Dam on Lake Murray was the largest earthen dam in the U.S when built in 1930. Along with a highway crossing the lake on top of the dam, one can use a dedicated walk/run lane which is 1.7 miles in length.
Lexington is strong in the arts, with a county arts association, a community theater and a county choral society.
The main street in downtown Lexington is in transition. Clusters of shops and small businesses are on major thoroughfares bordering the central core. Old Mill, an old mill on Main Street, has been converted to 15 shops, offices and restaurants.
Housing choices are a strength of Lexington, with neighborhoods offering everything from popularly priced single family homes, to high-end developments on Lake Murray.
With many attractions available in Columbia, a 20-minute drive brings visitors and residents alike to
explore the state zoo, museums, major medical facilities, the University of South Carolina athletic events,
and more shopping options.
