hen Morris and Carolyn Denton visited Brevard in 1999, it was love at first sight. Within 24 hours they bought a house and began their retirement move from Columbus, Mississippi.

“When we first moved here, people said everyone you’ve ever known will come visit you in the mountains,” said Mrs. Denton. It’s a good thing they like company!

Summer residents have been returning for many years to enjoy the cool summers. Eventually, some of them simply refuse to go home, preferring to experience the year-round beauty found here.

Brevard is a congenial small town with many big town amenities in a beautiful location. Could this be paradise? Not only are there cultural opportunities and events through Brevard College and the Paul Porter Center for the Performing Arts, but Transylvania County has over 200 waterfalls and is the home of some of the top trout streams in the United States, Pisgah National Forest with its many miles of biking or hiking trails, the Blue Ridge Parkway close by and many more attractions to please all ages. It has recently been chosen as one of the top Southern mountain towns by Pinnacle Magazine.

n addition to what is available in Brevard, shopping and dining opportunities abound with the larger cities of Hendersonville, Asheville and Greenville, S.C., close by.

Transylvania County is also a very caring community according to Morris Denton, who has been a part of Focus20/20 (a strategic plan for the community), United Way and other groups that are working with everything from economic development to environmental issues that affect the area.

Mr. Denton said, “There are many groups who try very hard to provide to the folks here those things that make a quality community.” One example of this is a brand new state-of-the-art library that will be finished in the next few months and a Boys and Girls Club to assist the latch-key children in the area.

The Dentons have also discovered the continuing education courses at the local Blue Ridge Community College. They have taken courses in everything from learning to handle a canoe to clogging. The area is home to many local artisans who work in all forms of media from clay to weaving.

From their window, the Dentons have a view of Mt. Pisgah and Shining Rock and, as Carolyn Denton said, “Every morning I wake up and say how lucky I am to live here.”

If you’re hooked on fly-fishing, Transylvania County’s Davidson River is ranked by Trout Unlimited magazine as one of the top 10 trout streams in America.

For those who’d rather admire their water from afar, more than 250 waterfalls grace these mountains. And with more than one-third of the county reserved in either Pisgah National Forest or Gorges State Park, visitors can always find undisturbed mountain trails and old forests. All this convinced the editors of Consumer Digest to name Brevard one of the best places in America to retire.
