everal years ago I was interviewing the legendary Pete Dye. “Of all the courses you've built, what's your favorite?” I asked. Before he could answer, his wife Alice – an extraordinary designer in her own right – spoke up.

“That’s a little like asking who’s your favorite child,” she chuckled. Her comment came to mind as I completed the ballot for my best 18 holes in the Carolinas.

RETURN TO CAROLINA GOLF 18 NOMINEES



Brett Borton formed Golf Marketing Strategies in November 2002, after nine years as director of marketing for Greenwood Development Corporation. Mr. Borton is the former Director of Communications for the Sea Pines Company on Hilton Head Island and in 1988 was one of the founders of Southern Links and Western Links magazines (now LINKS The Best of Golf), serving as editor of both publications until 1993. During that time he authored three books on golf and travel as part of “The Endless Fairway” series published by Simon & Schuster. He continues to be a contributing writer for LINKS and has also written features for Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. Mr. Borton received a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Ohio University in 1981 and lives on Hilton Head Island with his wife and three sons.

Lee Pace is a Chapel Hill-based journalist with more than 20 years experience in the golf-writing field. He has authored an extensive history on golf in Pinehurst, Pinehurst Stories, and currently is working on a new book, The Spirit of Pinehurst, due to be published in 2004. Mr. Pace has contributed to Golf Magazine, Links, Private Clubs, Golf Journal, Golfweek, Pinehurst Magazine and a variety of other publications.

Barry Sanders has over 13 years of experience in the golf business, encompassing a broad range of industries and market segments. After receiving an MBA in Marketing from the University of South Carolina in 1990, he began his career with Titleist & Footjoy Worldwide in New Bedford, Mass where he served as Golf Ball Marketing Manager for the Titleist and Pinnacle Brands. He joined Global Sports Management in Winston-Salem, N.C. to launch the Senior Series Golf Tour, which is the equivalent of the Nike Tour for the Senior PGA. After a career shift into the advertising agency business, he joined Brandon Advertising in Myrtle Beach, S.C. to serve as Vice President of New Business Development. Mr. Sanders is an avid golfer and currently serves as a course rater for Golfweek Magazine.

Joel Zuckerman Called “one of the most respected and sought-after golf writers in the southeast” by Golfer’s Guide, and “one of the most intriguing people in the Lowcountry” by the Carolina Morning News, Joel Zuckerman makes his home in Savannah, Georgia. He’s the author of Golf in the Lowcountry – An Extraordinary Journey through Hilton Head Island & Savannah, published in 2003. Next fall his second book, titled Golf Charms of Charleston will be released.  Mr. Zuckerman’s course reviews, player profiles, essays and features have appeared in more than 80 publications internationally, including Sports Illustrated, GOLF, Washington Golf Monthly, PGATour.com, Travel & Leisure Golf, Continental Magazine, Golfweek and Golf International.
