So many ways to enjoy yourself, build friendships and stay fit.
Explore your options!
Kayaking on the lake can become addictive. When you combine fun and fitness the
results will be awe-inspiring. It’s a great pastime with children, and occasionally,
a bit of friendly competition ramps up the paddle speed.
Peter and Sue Bromley had plans to move South – in about five years or so. By the time that date rolls around, they will have been living at Hampton Lake for almost four years!
“We’d vacationed in Hilton Head, so we knew the area fairly well,” Mr. Bromley explained. “We had a list of possible locations, and thought we were about five years away from taking that major step when we had a rainy day on vacation and decided to drive around to look at property.” They did, loved what they found at Hampton Lake, and purchased the same day.
Still thinking they’d stick to the five-year retirement plan, the couple returned home to the Philadelphia area. But, they kept thinking about Hampton Lake. “Life is short and we decided to go for it,” says Mr. Bromley.
Less than a year later, he retired as President and CEO of an international agrichemical company, sold the business and they moved into their new David Weekley
Cottage home, with its open floor plan and interior courtyard. They haven’t looked back.
Take the camera. Even though Lowcountry living is balmy all year, it does offer four seasons, something those Floridians can only dream about. You may need your coat a few days each year, but in return, you’ll have glorious fall colors that are particularly beautiful along the water’s edge.
“We love the water and enjoy our Duffy boat, as well as our kayaks,” he says, adding, “And of course the fitness center, spa and Backwater Bills are a regular part of our routine.” The Bromley’s Duffy, appropriately named “Just Did It,” is an electric pontoon boat that’s perfect for entertaining on the no-wake lake.
Getting acclimated to the community has been a breeze, even for these moving veterans who have lived from coast to coast as well as a number of years in the South of France and Paris. “We like the fact that all ages choose Hampton Lake and our neighbors across the street have young children. Social clubs for special interests are also forming.”
Mr. Bromley, who is on the Board of Directors for Bluffton Self Help, a local organization that helps the less fortunate, is delighted that the annual fund-raiser is being held at Hampton Lake. Mrs. Bromley also works part-time for “Cookies by Design.” The couple enjoys walking through the community as well as attending Club events that have helped them meet new friends.
Water, water everywhere. It’s how people relax, get fit, exercise, and simply lounge. Watching the children and grandchildren has never been more fun, but when it’s time to play grown-up style, an adults-only pool offers a great respite. These folks have thought of everything!
They appreciate the commitment by the community planners, especially John Reed. And, since they’ve vacationed in the area many times, they already have favorite restaurants, including the May River Grill, Pepper’s Porch, and Sieglers. “My wife also makes a great Lowcountry boil,” Mr. Bromley shares.
The Bromleys aren’t alone. Families from all over the country are discovering that Hampton Lake is indeed something special. And it all started with the vision of Reed Development who created a lake community to “bring fun, warmth, family and friendships to the forefront.” The way to do that, they decided was with water. In the Lowcountry, lifestyles revolve around water; through days at the beach, hours spent kayaking around lakes, and enjoying pools within their own resort amenities.
Hampton Lake offers a feast of water-drenched delights and opportunities for fun and fitness. With its near perfect underwater fish habitat, families can teach little ones how to land a largemouth “Tiger” Bass, or perhaps a feisty bluegill. Fifteen miles of shoreline offer countless places to cast a fishing line, or watch others try their luck.
Have a cool one with friends at the Tower Bar where you can overlook the water while enjoying a very adult vibe. Even those who are most passionate about family-time need a bit of grown-up conversation.
Doc’s Boathouse, with its covered boat slips, makes exploring the lake an effortless endeavor. The Tackle Box offers the accoutrements for a day on the water, including sunscreen and lures. Mother Nature’s intimate nature museum helps bring this part of the world into focus, through the efforts of award-winning naturalist Todd Ballantine.
Fish Tales is the kid’s retreat in Doc’s Boathouse, where children of all ages can enjoy games, wide screen TV, and the chance to simply hang out. For more adult diversions, the Tower Bar is an outdoor destination positioned on the lake, between the sandy beach, the resort-style lagoon swimming pool and Backwater Bill’s. The swimming complex includes one pool reserved for adults only, while other water areas invite all ages to have fun. Names like Adventure Lagoon and Shrimp’s Puddle describe more water amenities, designed with fun and safety in mind. On Adventure Lagoon, the lazy river flows gently around inner islands and finally, into the large pool area.
Backwater Bill’s is the community’s lakefront, casual restaurant where you can put on your most comfortable jeans and bring all your friends. Bring the kids and grandkids, too. Everyone is welcome at Backwater Bill's. With its down-home Lowcountry menu (think corn and crab fritters, smoked brisket, heirloom tomato salad, just to mention a small sample of the delicious fare), inviting fishing lodge decor, and views of the lake everywhere you turn, this is the place to be for lunch or dinner.
Bluffton has history, romance and a charm unlike any other small southern town. Homes are designed to encourage a year-round outdoor lifestyle, and the folks who live here protect this treasure. They’ve even written a book about the joys of Bluffton,
A Decision to Stay.
There’s more. Camping under the stars in the safety of an island on the lake is one example, while nine miles of nature trails make walking a pleasure and 340 acres of permanently protected hardwood forest provides a peaceful habitat for wildlife and the humans who enjoy observing them. An extensive Hampton Lake Field Guide prepared by Todd Ballantine educates as it entertains.
Golf is not forgotten, and Hampton Lake owners have the opportunity to purchase equity golf memberships at two of Reed Development’s nearby golf communities, Hampton Hall and Berkeley Hall. The fitness center has great workout equipment, and afterwards the Spa is an indulgent way to relax and rejuvenate body and spirit.
The family’s faithful companion was also considered with proper importance, resulting in Dog Paddle Park, a special enclosed area where families can romp and play with Fido and Rover. (They offer a rousing paws-up to the six-foot fire hydrant which gives four-footed buddies a cool drink and handheld shower.)
Hilton Head’s iconic lighthouse is a visible reminder that this resort area attracts vacationers from everywhere. One happy result is a treasure trove of fabulous restaurants just minutes from home.
Homes include Villa, Carriage, Cottage, and Coach Homes, as well as their new line of LifeSmart™

The result of such vision for living and playing is a community that is attracting national, award-winning attention. Hampton Lake was voted by the National Association of Home Builders and Professional Builder magazine as the “2008 Best Community in America” and “2007 Best Community Facility in America”. And although Hampton Lake is a great place to live and play, nearby Bluffton, Beaufort, and Hilton Head Island offer shopping, world-class restaurants, unsurpassed business and health services, and still more ways to entertain family and friends.
