Back on the water, Lake Murray hosts a number of annual events, from professional bass fishing tournaments, to sailing regattas presented by Lake Murray Sail Club, to wonderful boat parades and holiday fireworks displays.
The lake is also home to one of the largest colonies of Purple Martins in North America. These birds have chosen a tiny island in the middle of the lake as their nesting home. On summer evenings, families drift quietly around the island, watching the sunset, and enjoying the whir of birds overhead, returning home for the night. Children enjoy a dip in the lake any time, and many have learned to water ski in one of the quiet coves.
