Expo Magazine listed Columbia as the #1 bargain destination. And, although it is affordable, the quality of entertainment is nothing less than top-drawer.

There are 22 golf courses nearby when another form of recreation beckons. With 225 sites on the National Register in Lexington and Richland counties alone, history buffs have much to enjoy during their visit.
Interestingly enough, there's plenty of history under the lake water.
When construction began on the dam which formed the lake, about 5,000 people lived in the area now under 763 billion gallons of water. The land first had to be purchased. Not easy tasks, considering some lands were passed down from generation to generation without legal contracts, while other property was conveyed under crown grants from King James II of England when the U.S. was still a colony.

Finally, all land was acquired and, in 1927, clearing began for the construction of what was to be, at that time, the largest earthen dam in cubical content for power generation in the world. Three churches, six schools, and 193 graveyards with 2,323 graves had to be moved – not to mention the 100,000,000 feet of lumber obtained from clearing the land.
Today, thousands of people enjoy fishing, swimming, golfing, water-skiing, boating, camping and vacationing in Lake Murray Country, South Carolina’s jewel.
Although it is home for a large number of species, Lake Murray and surrounding rivers are known best for four types of fish – striped bass, largemouth bass, bream and crappie.

Lake Murray and the surrounding rivers offer miles and miles of boating pleasure for all types of boaters. Lake Murray invites canoeing or kayaking in calm waters or rapids, navigating a sailboat through brisk winds, or leisurely cruising in a motorboat or fishing skiff.
For those who want to get back to nature, camping is just the thing, either on one of the dozens of small islands dotted across the lake, at one of several private campgrounds, or at Dreher Island State Park. Nearly all of the campgrounds located on Lake Murray have swimming and fishing areas, docks and boat landings. In addition, total hookups are available at most campsites.
